What can be done about an insurance company who chose a contractor to repair a home after a large amount of damage. The contractor made off with 1/2 the money alotted to do repairs, left the home in shambles(major decrease in value) and left us with mechanics liens due to his nonpayment of supplies.

Thanks for any help. Just want to be a little educated before seeing attorney.

Have you given the insurance company a chance to remedy the problem and if so, have they refused?

If not, then it seems to be in the insurance company's court. They should be responsible for completing the repairs to your house.

However they wish to deal with the original contractor, it's up to them - its their money.

From the information in your post, and a layman's point of view, it seems that you have a ways to go before picking up the yellow pages.

Get the insurance company involved --if they selected the contractor they are responsible. And if they don't take care of it promptly, contact the state insurance department.

The ins company is of no help. They made no inspections, never followed up on our complaints which were frequent especially toward the end, and handed money to the contractor he asked for it. The home was a disaster and never finished. It was left in an unsafe manner with no attic vents in 2 attics, windows sealed shut and unable to open, etc.

As ALawyer says above - give the state insurance department or commissioner a jingle.

Here's the Web page for the Indiana Dep't of Insurance http://www.in.gov/idoi/.. Maybe there's some info there that will help.
