We work full time and had some water damage to our french doors - I contacted our insurance company and they said to call a contractor. I contacted a contractor in the phone book that said they work with insurance companies and they deal with water damage - I called and made an appointment. Upon appointment, my husband was unable to attend. The contractor informed me that it wasn't the door - it was the entire floor and it needed to be replace - I said, really -- he said, "oh yeah, besides insurance companies won't fix the door but they will fix the damage the door caused" We felt that the damage was extensive to the door and framing which is why we called the insurance company. The contractor had a form that I signed that authorized them apparently to do the door, dry out the floor, replace the flooring and the base and trim. He told me not to worry that nothing will be done until we see an estimate and my husband involved. So I signed the form without reading it and because he just kept talking. I didn't think twice about it until he told me to have the insurance company make the check out to them. I told him no that we needed an estimate and we would get other estimates and my husband will decide what to do -- he said no problem. I told him that if we do have to replace the floor we might do something different, he said that they could do whatever we wanted. We have laminate flooring about 700 sq feet. Two weeks later with my husband, they came over and he said without giving us a bid that the cost would be $8000 and because you got $5000 from your insurance, you're only cost would be $3000 - My husband told him that he wanted a bid on the exact cost of the repair. I got a call a week later and was asked when we could meet - I told the contractor to fax the bid. When we got the bid - we had asked that we include in the bid - an additional room that is attached - for 1000 sq feet the bid had jumped from $8000 to $20000 with no detail other than 8.50 sq ft for the flooring - We did not sign the faxed proposal and did not agree to the prices or terms - however when I contacted the contractor back to tell him that we were going to use the money to replace the door (which by the way he never addressed) and do something different with the floor - he told me that I had signed up for their services (because of the original visit where I signed a form of some sort without my husband present) and that they didn't do business like that --- which really bothered me. I thanked him for his time but am afraid that they will send some claim against us or something. I believe that this contractor is not honest and they do business in a manner that is not honest or legitimate. My husband said that since we didn't sign the bids we don't have to worry but what about the other paper I signed? I don't like that this contractor did a bid, called our insurance company several times to see how much money we would be getting and I'm afraid he expects that money.
