What is the name of your state? North Carolina

My daughter built a home 3 years ago and purchased homeowners inssurance. A month and a half ago her home was broken into and about $15,000.00 worth of stuff was stolen. We have been waiting on the insurance company to settle the claim and now they are telling her that she needs to provide receipts for the things that were taken. I have a six year old grandson who I bought things for and I do not use credit cards. I only use cash and I don't keep receipts. She has no receipts for the things that were hers and so they are trying to not pay her. I know that it is not fair that they have been receiving her insurance money and now they are giving her a run around about her claim. They are saying that all items over $250 in value need to have a receipt, well most of the items were over that. She purchased the insurance from an agent who did not explain this to her at the time of purchase. She was a young girl, purchasing her first home and needed homeowners. Please tell me what I can do to ensure that this company does not get away with settling this claim. I have never dealt with a homeowners claim before but I am not one who will allow them to just do my daughter this way. WIll going to the media help in this case? I will and plan to do everything in my powers to get this settled. Thank you for your advise.

She needs to prove her damages. Receipts is one way, perhaps the only way the insurance company will accept without a lawsuit. If they won't settle to your satisfaction, sue them. See what a court says.

What was stolen, and how has she determined the figure $15,000?

If it was mostly electronics, she should have some sort of evidence of what she owned, even if it is just owners manuals. If she used a check or debit card to buy things, the purchases will show up on her bank statements.

What did you buy for a small child that cost more than $250 and was stolen?

Your daughter needs to make an inventory of everything she claims was stolen and what she (or you or whover) paid for it or what its replacement value is.
