I live in Indiana. I lost my job in 2008 due to illness. My husband was fired in 2009 and I had to move down to Texas with my sister so that she could find me a doctor. This was in Aug of 2010. My husband and I got a storage unit in Indiana and he went to live with a friend. He was going to try and find work. He took my car without my permission and hit another car. He was in jail for five months because of his past. When he got out in Feb of this year, we did talk. I came back up and I found out he was cheating on me. Found out through Facebook. He won't return my calls, but I need a key to get into the storage unit. The guy at the storage place said I would have to get a lawyer. MY husband put his girlfriend's name on the storage unit. I have my gun in there. As a felon and him being on probation, I would not think this would be good. How do I go about getting my things out and if they did sell any of my stuff, what can I do? I am still sick, seeing a doctor. I live with my sister who is taking care of things, but this can't last much longer. We have no children. I also have a vehicle that is at his friend's house, but the title is in the storage unit. I need any help that someone can offer.

The storage agent gave you good advice. You should probably get an attorney. File for divorce and ask for possession of the items in the storage unit.

It is possible to do that without an attorney, but you'll need to learn all the court's procedures and rules and understand exactly what you need to do. Call the court clerk or search on line to see if there's a self-help program in your county. Meanwhile, spend some time here and on other site learning how the process works.
