We have been barn managers at a local family owned boarding stables for several years. Last month, we decided to quit as managers and pay boarding fees for two horses. About a week ago, the owners stated that all boarders had to be out by June 1st. Yesterday (Sunday), the owner was very confrontational while we were out taking care of our horses, and an arugment started. She said she would be happy if we left "today or tomorrow". We told her that we were paid up till the end of the month and left it at that. This monning, however, she left a check at the barn stating its our refund for the last week of boarding, and wants us out today. Can she legally do this, or are we within our rights to stay until the end of the month? I need help right away! Thank you.

My response:

Let's begin with the premise that the owner is an idiot. You're paid up, and there's nothing she can do except serve you with legal notice to vacate the premises.
Don't cash the check. And leave it where you found it.

Thank you so much for your advice. Yes, the owner is an idiot. Her biggest complaint was that she was irritated that I fed the barn cats wet cat food! So, from what you are saying, we can stay until the end of the month? The owner is very irrational, and when she does not take certain medication, she is bonkers (hence yesterday's actions). Can she file restaining orders against us so we can't get to the horses? What legally can she do to us, if anything at all? Thanks again - our evening there should be quite interesting.

My response:

She can try. But, it won't work. You have a right to the property and to get to your horses. Leave alone that which is hers, and give unto yourselves which belongs to you. Gee, that sounds biblical, doesn't it?

Very biblical, but you made me laugh for the first time since last night. Thanks again for your advice, I truly appreciate it. I may be back on tomorrow morning, depending upon what antics she pulls tonight. As long as she does not hurt the horses, I'll be fine. I work with some of the largest advertisers in the country - I think I can handle her!
