insurance company refused to pay 6 days on 23 stay inpatient hospital stay 5/01. patient was my 20 yr old son who was in for drug withdrawal/severe depression. Doctors would not let him leave unless he signed a "AMA- against medical advice" form, which he didn't want to do. (a nurse told him if he signed it he would be liable for the bill). so now a yr later we're getting bills for over $10k (hosp & MD's) that wasn't paid by insurance. hosp filed appeals and they were denied. we're in new york. son is now working & makes $7 hr.. hmmm...should he just file for bankrupcy due to excessive medical bills?

On what basis is the insurance carrier denying 6 days of his hospital stay?

Because he left AMA (although I wouldn't think that would make a difference in payment)? Because he exceeded his insurance plan's limits for this type of treatment? Because the hospital charged over the reasonable and customary limits allowed in his Plan?

Many insurance plans have specific limits on treatment for substance abuse, whether a dollar limit or a specific number of inpatient days they will pay for.
