state of indiana, my husband just requested his credit report to find that he owes $1419.74 of unpaided hospital bills, he is the ncp of this child and had no idea that the bills existed, he (ncp) has provided mediacal insurance for this child, how can a hospital allow people to put bills in other peoples name? do you have to show some kind of paper work to prove that this person is responsible for the bill, or can you just rattle off a name and address and that person is billed? ncp called the hospital and they said it was confidential information and could not release who signed, and if insurance was billed, if he (ncp) is billed why can't he get any information on the bill?

thanks

If the child received medical care, then the parents are liable for the costs.

HOWEVER, if he does have insurance, then this sounds like a communication problem, not a legal problem (yet) -- the hospital probably just doesn't have the insurance information to try to secure payments.

I would suggest that you contact the hospitals and let them know the insurance info -- account numbers, billing addresses, etc. Then the hospital can submit it to the insurance company and get reimbursement. Then if there's anything left to pay, you can deal with that issue at that time.

I'm guessing that there is a provision in your husband's decree (and there's CERTAINLY one in the newly effective Parenting Time Guidelines that would apply here) that the CP share any needed info w/the NCP. If that info is not shared, he could take her to court and ask that the court find her in contempt for not sharing that information.
