What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? MS

This is a STATE job. My boss regularly cusses, insults you mentally, has come with in of an inch of saying that you are lying. This past weekend he stated in a very loud and clear voice "I HAVE SOME WORTHLESS EMPLOYEES WORKING HERE!" The people he was talking to quit (part-timers), though one did come back only after he, my boss said he was sorry and that he should not have said that. I told the kid, 17 yrs old, it didn't matter, he still should not have said that. The more I thought about it, the more I realized he wasn't just talking about one person but ALL OF HIS EMPLOYEES. I have worked there for 5 years. He 23 next year sometime. This is just the tip of "the iceberg", I could go on and on!

This has gone on ever since I came to work there. We hired a new clerk 01-01-02, her very first day, she quit 2 weeks later because he intimidated her. He thought it was funny and actually laughed at me when I told him that he was intimidating. He even tried to intimidate her into coming back to work. Of course she didn't.

I want to talk to our Dist. Manager, but I am afraid that they might say, well if you're this unhappy, maybe you should look for another job or worse!!! I'm single and only one job, no extra money to fall back on.

I feel that this is a serious case of a Hostile Work Enviroment.

Only in the dictionary sense; not in the legal. There is nothing illegal about a boss being a jerk, unless he is a jerk only to specific people and that because of their membership in a protected group. Being an equal opportunity jerk - i.e. treating everyone badly - is not illegal. Bad management yes; illegal no.

To CBG:

Thanks for your input. You're right he is a MAJOR jerk. But, is it okay for him to tell you that you are ****ing him off? (I am at the library and the computer is editing my type. The first letter is a P!)

It's crude but it't not unlawful. Now your employer's policy may well prohibit vulgar or obscene language in the workplace but that's a separate matter.

Your choices are: (1) continue to tolerate the situation; (2) complain to the District Manager; (3) look for another job.

The ball is in your court. Good luck.
