My wife and her brother sold a house that their dad lived in when he died.At closing her brothers liens ate into her equity 1/2 by 35,000.dollars-the lawyer had her brother sign an IOU for 11,000,my wife let him slide for the other24,000.
at the closing my wife asked him to let her know how much 1/2 of her dad's funeral charges were, and she would mail her brother a check.Nine months went by and we never heard from him,we assumed he did the right thing and paid the aprox.4000 dollars .He did owe her 11,000 .Unfortunately he didn't and he called demanding the money from my wife.As it turns out her brothers wife signed the papers and they want the money from her,I am afraid she doesn't know about her husbands debts to my wife or the debts we had in order to keep the property from going into forclosure(he stoped paying the mortage when his dad died)nor does his wife know the debts it required us to take on while trying to sell the house. She is now trying to sue us,yet she hasn't spoke to my wife since the funeral 2 1/2 years ago.Contacting them is almost impossible because I believe her husband is keeping communications from her in an effort to not get her angry at him.Are we liable under the circumstances for anything.

Thanks
