I have gotten myself into a real mess. Due to my company downsizing and my position being eliminated and taking a $12,000/year paycut and also being off of work for 2 months on medical leave, I have gotten myself into a real mess and now I have bad credit. I've been late on credit cards (never the car or the Mortgage - thank God!) I have paid utilities late and credit cards late. Things have ended up in collections, but they've never been charged off and I've never had a judgement filed against me. I haven't seen my credit report, but I know that I have things showing as being 30, 90, 120 and more days past due. I have receintly taken a personal loan to pay off credit cards and there's about $1000 in other debt that I need to clear up before I get myself back on track and on a budget that I can handle.
I see these advertisements about fixing your credit legally - can this be done? If not, does anyone have any advice for me to clean up the damage that I have done?
What is considered a good fica score? How do you raise your fica score?
I 've been told that it's easy to mess up your credit and almost impossible to clean it up. Is it true that once you're in trouble, you're in trouble forever? HELP???

Just in general...

Stay away from the "fix your credit" places...they are almost all scams...they'll take your money and you'll be in worse shape than you are now. The few that are legit don't do anything you can't do yourself, and it won't cost you near as much.
