I have been mentoring an inner-city young man for the past 3 months. I have been a teacher in the inner-city for the past 25 years. This young man ( an adult) was arrested for burglary. His bail was set at $25,000. I bailed him out and set a plan into action. I enrolled him in an adult learning center so that he might get his GED. He was out 4 days and was arrested again for an outstanding ticket for $77.00. When the police officer stopped him and told him they had a warrant he ran (which I know was stupid), they are also trying to pin on him a stolen car radio, which I know he did not do. His new bail is at $50,000. I cannot afford the 10% to get him out.
Public defenders do NOT accept collect calls from jail. And his requests to the social workers at jail to make a call have gone unanswered. I have been trying to explain the situation to the Public Defender but he will not talk to me since the prisoner is an adult. Is there any way that I can speak to the public defender on his behalf or does he just have to sit in jail? Also, while in jail he got a letter that the $77.00 ticket was dismissed as it was discovered to be an error, based on that is there any chance that the judge might uphold the previous bail or reduce the current one?

50,000 bail

you might try having him sign a letter that you are authorized to have leagal counsel speak with you. As long as they have it notorized and in writing they can do this, otherwise it infringes on the lawyer client confidentiality. There is a web site for the rights of peopel who are detained in jail. It's called prisioners rights. Good Luck

If I were you,I'd find interest in an animal shelter, or something else that does not involve your wallet.
Think about this one Teach., He was busted on a burglary charge, then a ticket, then has charges pending on a car radio theft(2nd count of a related crime),and you honestly think for a nano-second that his bail is going to be reduced?
You want advice? Get your money back from the bond if you can. Have the bond revolked. He is going to get nailed for one of the charges pending against him,if not all of them. So with this in mind, every day he is in the can, waiting to go to court,it is one day less he will have to do later. It all counts towards his sentence in the end.
Check into a "Tough Love" program. He got into this,he needs to deal with it.

First of all Humble Warrior you should humble yourself upon Gods grace. For we love the sinner but not the sin, it is not our job to pass judgement upon others.

Now lets get to the law, first of all , one is to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. tough love programs do not always work. yes one must learn to take responcibility for their own actions, however sometimes a gentle hand or a sympathetic ear helps.
Get involved in an animal shelter where your wallet isn't an issue! That is an insult upon someone who cares about the well being of someone else. Love and careing from the heart is not based on the money in your wallet. I see you apparently have some inner issues you yourself need to address.

Teach, I again suggest you do what you feel is right in helping this person, just remember to set reasonable boundries for yourself. I suggest you yourself become familiar with the law. You can try http://www.findlaw.com
I am sure there is more to this case than has been spoken.
You can also check out rights of prisioners , even though they are incarsarated , they too have rights under the law.
There is a clause for excessive bail under our constitution.
Unless they have a wittness to the crime of burglary or he was caught with the radio, the DA has a difficult road ahead of him. When bail is placed upon someone there are several factors they must take into concideration. There are some bail bondsman who are willing to work with you on the 10% fee. look around and make sure they are able to post bail in your state. I wish you luck

You obviously have never spent a minute in a court room or a jail. If you are in jail, you are guilty and have to prove yourself innocent in order to get out. I dont give a damn what the law says.....that is a concrete fact.
Also,it is also a concrete fact that the prosecutors office is not going to let him out of jail at any cost with-out a charge on his ass. They would rather die a long slow death than admit they might be wrong, therefore they will hang some kind of a charge on him,and keep the guy in jail no matter what. If you think I'm wrong......lets pray that the questioner keeps us posted as to the results of this action......I can garun-damn-tee the guy is not walking away.
As far as bail goes....that involves flight risk. This is determined by the mere PERCEPTIONS of the judge as to what the persons risk of flight is/or may become if released, and the chance that the person is a danger to the society upon which he is being released, the potential for continued activity of crime, and the impact it may have upon the community at large.
I defy you to tell me what the judge in any bail hearing has in mind at the time of bail issuance.......hence the fact that the bail is not going to be reduced enough to facilitate a release of the defendant.
I would highly suggest that YOU study the law....I know it pretty damn well

I beg your pardon, I have spent a night in jail at one point in my life, and you are correct, they treat you as if you have no rights. I have also spent this past summer getting my brother released from jail. As far as being familiar with the law, I am. I know more about the law than i sometimes care too, howver if we as a society don't make sure the law is used in the proper context than what are they for? I do agree that many feel hopeless and angered because the Law is used in a crooked sence at times, but we as the people of The United States must stand up for what is right and just , and those who missuse it must be held accountable for it, even the judges.

Getting the Law as a whole or even a SINGLE judge to admit that the prosecution, and probation system is completely crooked.....or even "slightly" abused is akin to getting Jesus to become an athiest.
They very people who have taken the laws to the absolute extremes of all comprehensible logic, are the same ones that make, enforce ,and abuse them
If you dont believe me,go get caught with a little weed in your pocket in my state,or a DUI,or write a bad check.
Your going to get more time, and go through more time on parol than if you shot your wife.
