I am trying to purchase my first home and I have a credit report that states a judgment against me. Do I send a check to the county clerks office or what?

Dear LeeLyn,

You need to contact the Judgment Creditor (this is the person who sued you) and find out what the current balance on the judgment is. In addition to the principal balance on your credit report, you will most likely be responsible to pay court costs, attorney fees, and interest.

Once you find the balance, pay the judgment creditor directly. Send a letter with your payment, demanding that they immediately file a Satisfaction of Judgment with the court and the County Recorder's office. When they file this paperwork they will serve a copy of it on you (you will receive a copy in the mail) and you can show that to the mortgage company until your credit report is cleared up.
