I live in NJ. I have two daughers, 18 and 16, each with their own child. Recently there has been a falling out between us. The 18 year old has not attended school for the last three years and has not lived under my roof since april. she just recently qualified for welfare assistance. at the present time they are living with a friend of the family. the are taking guardianship of the two girls. support has recently become an issue. i have been divorced from their father for a number of years now. i have been forwarding the support checks i get from him to my daughters. my question is am i still responsible for the oldest one? (the 18 year old). Am i required to pay support for her? and if this family willingly took them in without me asking them to do so, how much support am i required to give them? I would like to support the younger one since she cannot get on the welfare program like her sister because of her age. both daughters are returning to high school for this school year. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Oh what a great family you raised. Two teenage daughters, both with child, 1 claiming welfare and the other wanting to.

You should not be responsible for the 18 year old (although you might if she does return to school full time). I however will be paying for her via my taxes. The 16 year old you will be if this couple gain custody or guardianship of her.

LB - NJ emancipation

Is someone still paying support on the 18 year old or has she been legally emancipated?

The fathers of these children are responsible for paying support.
