What is the name of your state? KS

This is about my hubby's nephew. The man is 42 years old, divorced for many years, has 2 kids in High school, and has not had a job in over 10 years. something has happened to him and we don't know what. But for the last month he has refused to bathe. he's drinking a case of beer a day and hurt his wrist. We took him to the ER and he fell asleep and wet his pants. the ER doc gave him a prescription that his mother paid for and he refuse to take it cause the doc said it was a steriod and he said he didn't want to wake up with an erection he couldn't get rid of. I tried to explain to him the difference but still he refused. The doc ordered a new med for him, told that if he drank with them, it would kill him but he had to take the med so he could use his wrist again but he refused the med.

Now here is what the problem is. He walks into his mothers business with wet pants and tonight he went to his sons graduation with the same clothes that he has worn and wet in all month!

Now my question is: How can we get him commited so he'll get the help he needs? and who should start the proceedings? His Mom or can we?

Call your county mental health department, they may be able to advise you on this issue. If he is not a risk to harm self or others, it may be difficult, however if he is showing up in public soaked in urine call the pollice.

Rmet is right, But Adult Protective Services may be able to help as well.

You may look into a 2 party affidavit also. Go to courthouse and see what is required in your state. Usually 2 people will have to write down the signs that they think show the person is unable to care for themself. The judge will look it over and maybe ask questions. If he/she feels there is enough evidence, a court order will be issued remanding the person to a local ER for evaluation. The sheriffs dept usually is mandated with picking the person up and taking them in for the eval. Once at the ER a mobile assessment team from the local mental health hospital will usually come to the ER and evaluate the person and then commit them to the local psychiatric hospital if warranted.
Good luck.
