My mother left me a bunch of credit card debt totalling $7k before leaving the country for good, all of them already overdue by a few months.

Because I am in a very deep financial trouble myself, I only paid the card companies a few dollars a month each.

Now the two major ones, Providian (3k now) and Household (3k now), demand FULL payments at once, which obviously is way beyond my current financial situation. Household says it sold the account to a collection agency.

I tried to negotiate a payment plan with them but they will not talk to me because of 'privacy laws'. My mother, no longer in the US, has no intention to pay it back. (I am not in the best of terms with her.)

I did not cosign any of them.

I thought if I paid at least a few dollars every month (showing the intention to pay it off) they would give me a tiny break, but no.

What should I do to set up a payment plan or negotiation schedule? The card companies simply won't talk to me.

I don't understand. You didn't cosign, and they're your mother's personal credit cards? So why are you even involved?

Credit card companies must LOVE people like you! I can't believe you're even considering working out a payment plan. You have absolutely no obligation to pay this debt. Explain to them that your mother left the country and they can politely go screw themselves.
