What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Arizona; divorce was in Colorado; Ex-wife still lives in Colorado.

My ex-wife and I bought a 2004 Saturn Ion 2 together. Each of us contributed money towards the purchase price. We paid for the car in full. We were divorced in June 2006 and we chose not to get involved with the court dividing our assets. By mutual agreement, I kept the car. Her name is still on the title. I would like to get it removed. I could ask her to write a letter to the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles but I would prefer not to get her involved. Since it has been over 5 years since we divorced and she has never asked for the car and she has never asked for any payment for the car, I was thinking that maybe the car defaults to full ownership by me at this point. Is there a way to get her name removed from the title without her getting involved?

Thanks in advance for your advice, saturnion2.

what you are trying to do is illegal. it's her car too. by not involving the courts, you made a mistake. now, you will have to involve the courts. either you ask her very nicely to sign over her portion of HER vehicle, or you may have to sue her and quite possible buy her out of her portion.

Ask her to sign the appropriate paperwork. You'll probably end up having to offer some cash. Heck, seems to me that you should offer her half the value of the vehicle at the time of your divorce.

ETA: As Isis said - I bet it would have been much easier to have the courts involved in your division of assets, huh?
