I'm eighteen, and I'm pregnant. My boyfriend and I really want to get married before the baby is born. The problem is, that I will lose my medical insurance if I get married. ( I'm covered under my parent's policy ) And both the baby and I are otherwise covered until I turn nineteen. My question is, would my medical insurance be able to find out that I'm married if we get a confidential marriage license, and would they even be likely to look into it ?

My response:

A "confidential marriage certificate" is not a public record (Ca Fam § 511(a)--not open to public inspection except by court order for good cause shown); and the date of the marriage, as well as any other information contained in the certificate, "shall not be disclosed" except upon court order (Ca Fam § 511(c) & (d)). However, if the insurance company should find out; e.g., through an inspection of the birth certificate, or some other source, that there was a marriage and insurance fraud is involved, they could Petition the court to have the records unsealed, and then go after you for the fraud.

Good luck,

"Always looking over my shoulder",
