What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Virginia

I am married to a man who has sexually, physically and emotionally abused me for much of our 8 year marriage. I never went to the police out of fear of retribution and what would happen to our financial situation since he would probably lose his security clearance and job. Because of the financial difficulties of being separated, I am currently living with my husband. I am desperate to move on with my life and put an end to this chapter in my life but have sought out legal advice and nobody will even talk to me until I can provide a $1500 retainer which I can't afford. Is there a way, since my husband is the primary wage earner (70% of household income), to have the court mandate that he pays my attorney fees?

Call your local domestic violence shelter. They can help you plan a safe exit.

Understand that while the judge may order that DH pay your attorney's fees, you would have to be able to pay them if the judge does not order it. Also, with such a short marriage, any alimony will be short term at best (a few years, maybe).

Are there children involved?
