I live in an apt building that used to be an old Motel 6 or something. While it was a motel, boarders could get adjoining rooms. As a result, there is a door between mine and my neighbors rooms. Also, the wall containing the door, which separates our rooms, is nothing but 2X4 studs and some paneling. Needless to say, even a normal conversational tone can be heard through this door. I am a student at Eastern Illinois University and I am renting the apt. in order to have a quiet place to study. When I was shown my apt. the one next door was unoccupied so I had no idea of the noise level. It isn't my neighbor's fault, the wall is just too thin. Also their cigarette smoke come into my apt. around their door. Now comes the kicker-- My landlord is never around to give rent to, but yet I get charged 15.00 every time I'm late with it. He has never givin me a copy of my lease even though he said he would when I signed it and then I asked about getting a copy again a couple of months later, still nothing. I went to the courthouse to find out who owned the building, but it is in a trust with the bank, and the bank will not give out the name. So in essence, I don't even know who to complain to. Do I have grounds to get out of my lease? That is what I would like best.

Wow, what a mess!
If I were you, I'd pack up and vacate the premises.
Then I would send a certified letter to the Bank advising them what you did and why. Note that you would like them to send a copy of the letter to the anonoymous owner.
Advise him/her that the lease contract has been breached by them and if they attempt to enforce the lease agreement, there will be a winner in court but it won't be them.
That will probably be the last dealing you have with them.
No. Im not a lawyer but have been around enough to see whats going on. I used to own rental properties and always tried to be fair to my tenants. Yes, I have been taken but I don't paint everyone with the same brush. I just got out of the business.
