Lost sale/customer due to slander! What can I do???

What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Illinois

I successfully sold a diamond to a customer. After the sale, the customer showed the stone to a competitor of mine. The competitor affirmed to my customer that the diamond was “treated” (i.e. – the diamond had an inclusion/imperfection, this imperfection was removed, and the remaining cavity/fissure was then concealed by being “filled” with a particular substance).

This diamond “treatment” method does indeed exist; nevertheless, the claim that my competitor made to my customer is ENTIRELY, and UNCONDITIONALLY, FALSE. Consequently, the customer returned the stone. I not only lost money, I lost the sale, I lost the customer (and all future business), I lost potential customers from referrals, and I may lose existing customers from negative/false publicity.

What is the Term of Art for my competitor’s offense?

What legal actions should I consider?

Thank you so very much for your time and assistance!
