My name is Brenda Ramsey. I am writing this letter in hopes that you will help me. On Sunday, 07/23/00, I went to Sally’s Beauty Supplies in Conroe, Texas I “had” really long hair, and thought it would be more feasible to purchase a home perm kit, and do it myself. I’ve been there several times before, to purchase my hair color, so this wasn’t my first visit to Sally’s. But today there was a new sales clerk there, while attempting to purchase the product, the sales clerk asked me if I was a license beautician. I then told her that I wasn’t. She continued with telling me that I had to be a license beautician in order to purchase the product that I was about to buy ( A Platinum Hair Care Product)
I then asked the clerk, what she would suggest that I use, that would go with the texture of my hair. She suggested I use “Reinforcer de Pantresse.” Since the woman worked in a chemical related atmosphere I assumed she knew what she was talking about when she suggested this product. After carefully reading the front and back cover, I thought I would go ahead and try the “Reinforcer”

I read all the instruction that came in the box. I did exactly what the instructions said. But after I washed the neutralizer out, and began to run a pick through my hair, I noticed an abnormal amount of hair coming out of my head. I stroked a few times more, when I realized “Oh my God” I’m loosing my hair. I’ve never experienced anything like this before in my whole life. It is a woman’s nightmare, to run her fingers through her hair and have it come out onto her hands. I lost a tremendous amount of hair. My hair was once down my lower back, but now I had to have it all removed.
I called Pantresee at the 1-800 - 851-1555 number, which is located inside n the instructions manuel, but wasn’t able to talk to a live person. I then decided to find their e-mail address, and write them a letter, and I expected someone to call me immediately, but by 10 am Monday morning, when no one called, I jumped back on the phone and tried the attempt again.
I was able to reach a woman named Cheryl. She told me that she would have a Chemist call me back, 30 minutes went by, ( the longest 30 minutes of my life) when I received a returning phone call, but it wasn't the Chemist, it was Cheryl again. She told me, that the product was to be sold to: ONLY LICENSE , beauticians, and, that they were not liable for anything that happened to me.
First of all, the only thing running through my mind at that given moment was HELP ME PLEASE! She then suggested that I buy their neutralizer and have a professional do my hair.
You know this is very sad. It has taken me 8 years to get my hair to be the length that it was. Now it’s gone, and there’s nothing that can bring it back. (except another 8 years) and the only suggestion that these people can make is a neutralizer?

I know that this isn’t a life threatening disease or long term defect. But this is Damaging to a persons self esteem, personality, and it striped away my identity. I HAVE CRIED ENDLESSLY. How many other women have been effected by these chemicals? Well you know, I have a written statement and another woman who willing to testify, that she has had similar reactions to these chemicals, Her name is Christina, she’s not more than 17, 18 years old. I met her at the Fantastic Sam’s. (while I was trying to salvage what little hair I had left) She gave me her phone number, and told me that she also bought a hair product from Sally’s that caused her to loose her hair. And when I stopped at Grandy’s Restaurant, off of Rayford & Sawdust, today, 07/25/00 a cashier noticed the big change in my hair, and after telling her what happened, she told me LAST Year she feel victim to these Chemicals, and she also lost her hair.
The package I bought did not say for Commercial Use Only. NOR Did it say, WARNING. This product should be used only by trained license professionals. Failure to use this product correctly could cause MASSIVE Hair Loss.
I bought this product in a Beauty Salon Supply store., and therefore, feel that if they’re going to sale to both a commercial, and a public clientele, there should be Warning Labels On and In the products. There needs to be a staff who knows what these chemicals can do to a person if not used correctly. You can not put a price on ones self-esteem, I feel like I had a part of me taken away, with out any question and no regrets, and therefore request highest amount of damages that the law allows, for such a negligent act as this one. I want these companies to NOTE there is a great possibility, that Hair Loss will occur if their product is not used correctly. I’m speaking out for the women and future victims of these products, and seek justice before this happens to another person.
I am very upset, because I was sold a product that caused harm to me, and told that nothing can be done. You know what I say (B.S.) it can be done. This should have been prevented, by not only, the sales clerk, but also the manufacture of this product. This can not be allowed to happen to another person. Please I’m sure there’s plenty of women out there that has been a victim of these chemicals, that loss their hair, I’ve already spoke to two of them. Its just finding the attorney willing to fight for them. Please help me stop this, I loved my hair and to think that something so quickly can cause it to fall out, is just sad and disappointing to see these companies get away with this. Let’s Start with the one who left all the important information out of their instructions. Please call me if you think you can handle this case.

Sincerely,

Brenda K. Ramsey
