I want to fence in my yard. My township laws state that any fence I build must be 12" inside of the property line. Out of the 3 properties that border my back yard, 2 of the properties currently are fenced legally (12" inside their property line) and the third property is actually a township utility easement. I want to avoid building a fence on the two sides that already have a fence, but I will need to cross onto their 12" of property to hook into them so my dog doesn't run away. How do I go about getting permission from these neighbors to link my fence into theirs. We already have verbal agreements to do the work, but the township requires something in writing before approving the building permit. How should I word it to avoid problems down the road? Should I use a real estate lawyer or is there a standard form that exists out there for this?

Thanks for your responses.

It depends on your neighbors. If they are worried about the fence possibly affecting property rights, you should probably hire a lawyer to draw up a license agreement. A license gives you permission to use their land, but they can revoke the license at any time. This prevents the fence from establishing different property rights than those now contemplated by the parties. Or you can draw something up yourself. Try doing some research at the local county law library, they usually have form books and the librarian will assist you.
