What is the name of your state? San Diego, Ca

Im 18 years old and im a high school senior. Im planing to become a police officer when i graduate. I have everything I need, im 18, I have no criminal backround, and I am good shape. All i need is my High school Diploma. However that seems to be the hard part. I have all my class's except for one that im missing. I have failed What is called here U.S. History 1 and 2. Im not good at it. I failed it when i was in 11th grade and was going to retake durring my 12th grade year. I knew i need this class or i would not graduate, so i was going to make sure to pass no matter what. Well i had the class, but soem stupid reason, my counselor pulled me out of it adn told me i had to go to an Adult school. I do not feel i should have to go to a whole diffrent class when i had the chance to take it. Well its now my last 3 months in high school and there no chance to make up what im missing. I just want my high school diploma so i can join the police reserves. Thats been my dream. There has to be a way to fight the school, i had a chance and they pulled me out of it. I do not want to be a high school drop out!!!! I want my diploma Thats all. Is there some where i can start before there no more time?

You have several options.
Take the class in adult school as your counselor said.
Take and pass the GED.
Take and pass the CHSPE.
Attend community college.
What is causing you to fail this one class, do yu have a learning disability?
This may be a clue of difficulties ahead.
One of our members Carl was a Police officer in San Diego perhaps he can help answer this for you.

No, no learning disability. The problem is that if i do go to adult i can only make up one part, There would be no chance to make up the 2ed part. I would have to make it up about way later and would not be able to graduate with my class. As iv said i was in a history class but they pulled me out. They told me i can not retake it with the same teacher. I would like all the help i can!

Contrary to television, the most necssary tools for a peace officer today are communication skills - both verbally and in writing. If you cannot read and write effectively and properly you will never succeed. In fact, when I was in your neck of the woods 3 out of 4 trainees lost in field training were lost due to their inability to write effectively.

Just having a GED or diploma is not enough. If you plan to succeed in a career as a police officer you NEED a college education. You cannot promote to sergeant without at LEAST 30 semester units of college - and many agencies require an AA or equivalent for sergeants and a BA/BS or better for Lieutenant and above.

If you must, go for your GED. But if you have trouble passing history, I would also suggest that you take some college courses prior to applying as a peace officer. If you fail to pass a background - even as a reserve - you could find yourself forever unable to be hired.

You will not realistically succeed at a peace officer job unless you are 21 years old anyway, so I would take the next few years to improve your education and suitability as a candidate.

Here's a link to selection and hiring standards:

Get that education or write off police work.

Thanks Carl for all the info. I would love to avoid a GED. The thing i want the most is to graduate with my class of 2005. im fully ready to do what it takes to pass but there making it hard, plus theres only 3 months left.

As ive sayed I was in a history class but they pulled me out because "you can not take the same class with the same teacher" and there was no way to change any of my class's. i have herd of no law or rule saying that. Is there anything i can do to fight this so i can graduate with my class of 2005?

If you're required to pass History 1 & 2, you have to pass History 1 & 2. When were you pulled from the class? Were you taking them concurrently? You may find that you have to finish the requirement during the summer and get your diploma late. The school MAY allow you to walk with your class, however.

Go talk to your school principal. When I was in high school one of my best friends failed her government class our senior year and she has to go to adult ed over the summer to get her GED or diploma (I don't remember which one). But our school principal did allow her to walk with our class (and even allowed her to attend the graduation party our school sponsored) and none of her classmates were aware that she did not actually graduate that same day. Best of luck to you!
