I was robbed by a friend of a friend...HELP!!!

What is the name of your state? MI

So I throw a little house warming party for family and friends Saturday night. Sunday morning, I find my wallet to be empty...including coupons! My bank envelope that I was saving for Property Taxes empty! And my bank envelope with spending money empty! There are only 3 people who could have stolen it. One is my girlfriend. One is a friend that I've known all my life (30+ years). The other is a friend of the friend. I'm sure it was her. Why? Because while we were sitting out on the patio, she had to go inside the house a few times to go to the restroom. And both me and my friends wife saw her with a bunch of $100's in her purse.

Yep, she almost forgot her purse and her boyfriend went in the house to get it. Opens it to get the car keys out and pulls out a huge wad of cash! With a very dumbfounded look on his face, he asked her where she got it. Since earlier in the night she mentioned that she is not working and has no money. She claimed she had been saving it.

Of course I didn't think twice at the time. It was late, I had a few beers. Those neuons weren't quite firing very well at the time. Like they say, hindsight is 20/20.

And now after checking the house, I find that some of my jewlery is missing as well! This is great.

All in all, she got about $1700.00 in cash. And about $6000.00 in jewelry.

How would I go abouts claiming this? Since she was a guest, am I screwed? Since I can't prove that she didn't have that money before and that it's mine, am I SOL?

I'm in a tight spot now because Property Taxes are due in about 2 1/2 weeks, but there is no way I can pay them now!

HELP!!! :(

You can file a police report, to start. You can then contact your insurance company to file a claim. The problem for you is that cash is only covered for about $250-$500 TOTAL, and jewelry coverage, unless specific pieces were added as a rider, is usually limited to about $250 per item. You will be required to show proof of purchase (receipts) for the items that are missing. Sometimes you will be allowed to show pictures which show you wearing the jewelry, but then you must prove its value.

I have filed a police report as well as reported it with my homeowner's insurance. It looks like I might be getting around $1500 from insurance. A far cry from how much was taken, but at least it gets me closer to paying my taxes, which are a priority right now. I just hope it doesn't take longer than a couple weeks, or I'm in trouble!

I have the reciepts from the items, so I think I'm okay on that front. I'm still in shock as to the balls that girl had to do that in my home while I was out on the patio! I just can't believe how low some people are willing to go.

But anyway....thanks for the advise.

I found out that I am only going to get $1250 from insurance. $250 for the cash and $1000 for all the jewelry. Ug..this sucks. Now I have to come up with $750 in two weeks...not good.

My advice to you is in the future keep your money in a bank account. It's very safe in there. And next year when the property tax bill comes, all you have to do is write a check.

Thanks for the advice, but I do have valid reasons as to why I did not do this this time.

#1. I did not have a bank account until about 2 weeks ago.

#2. I have a bad history of a particular company that says I don't owe them money, garnishing my bank account...but that's another story.

I will be purchasing a fire safe soon...after I pay taxes and save up some money for one.

Also, it looks like I will be getting my stuff back. Her boyfriend called me up this morning really appologetic and is willing to meet me to give it back. Wo-hoo!

If you do get all your stuff back make sure you let you homeowners insurance know about it.
