I was served by a family member. I don't live in Wisconsin. I live in Illinois. She earns twice as much as I do and has an attorney. Is there anything I can do to postpone going to court so I have time to retain an attorney?

ORDER TO SHOW CAUSE FOR CONTEMPT OF
CHILD SUPPORT OR OTHER FINANCIAL ORDER

Step 6: Serve the Order to Show Cause and Affidavit

The court needs proof that the other side knows about the hearing; it cannot take your word for it. You
must provide the other side with a copy of your Order to Show Cause and Affidavit (called “serving the
papers”). There are a number of ways to accomplish this.

3. Private Person
If the person you are serving lives in Wisconsin you may use a friend or family member to serve
the Order to Show Cause and Affidavit forms on the other party. The person must be at least
eighteen (18) years of age and a Wisconsin resident. You, as a party, cannot serve the papers
unless all parties agree. Once the forms have been served, have the person serving the papers
fill out the Affidavit of Service form. It must be signed in front of a Notary Public. Bring it with
you to the hearing. What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

File with the court a dispute of proper service and ask for a continuance to obtain counsel.

How do I do that?

Thank you for your reply. How would I go about it? I called the court and there is no form for it.
