What is the name of your state? California, but it goes for any state.

If I bought an illegal weapon (such as a cane sword), is it legal to have it shipped if you had no prior knowledge it was illegal? Can you get arrested/fined for having it shipped, or only if you use/posses it in public?

Possession (private or public) is illegal, by shipping you bring the Feds into the act with Bigger penalities and fines
