What is the name of your state?
Illinois - McHenry County

My landlord came to me the other day (May 9, 2005) and asked me if I had made a decision about either moving to his 1-bedroom apartment that's part of the duplex I'm renting now. Currently, I'm renting a 3-bedroom 2-bath for $400 per month as agreed upon the old landlord (his mother who sold the duplex to her son) and myself. So, the initial agreement was between myself and the old lady. No Written lease at all, just a month-to-month oral agreement. Now he's taking over the place, and wants us to move. We were told we had to move to the 1-bedroom apartment at the end of this month, or move out completely. No written notice or anything. Plus, he wants to raise our rent to $500, because he feels we've been getting this place too cheap.

Any suggestions?

Until you receive proper written notice, you don't have to make any decisions. Once you get written notice, your choices will be move to the smaller unit+increased rent or move to another property. I'd start packing because the day will come when your landlord figures out what he needs to do...a move is inevitable.

Verify with your state's LL/T laws on how much notice the new LL has to ghive you...

Additionally, find out what his address is where he currently receives mail and for the rest of the time he is thee, send your rent check to that address CRRR to make sure he gets it and doesn't turn around and state you failed to pay rent... Make sure to put on your check the FULL rent amount, the month it is for and the date...
