What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

My problem is this my daughter missed 2 days of school because she was ill. So I sent her back to school with a note and forms from the hospital showing she was actually sick. The school called her in for a meeting and proceeded to tell her that if she continued to miss school that they would call me in, contact the police, and bring legal action against me. Take into consideration she is a straight "A" student, in honor classes, and liked and respected by all her teachers. She is only 13 years of age. What are our rights as parents? How can we protect our self from be bullied by the school? Short from leaving our kids at school with a blanket and barf bag in the care of the nurse. I understand every child is worth so much money for the school, but at some point our kids must come first. I understand in California the school gets $5,865 dollars for every student who is in their seat everyday.

There are "count days" in schools when student attendance is important because the number of students recorded on those days determines the funding. I don't know if these were days your daughter missed but, even IF your daughter was absent from school on those two days, the treatment she received (as you describe it) was unwarranted.

Because the school's reaction sounds extreme, I have to suspect that more is involved. School just started this past week, didn't it? Or do your schools start before Labor Day?

I suspect the school will have a different version of events and conversations.
