What is the name of your state? florida
My friend received a $7,000.00 settlement from a major retailer for a discrimination claim. She did not file a return, as this was her only reportable income, as she has not worked due to health reasons... I think she screwed up. What is the limit for a person not to have to file a return? and can she file next year, as she plans to return to work this year...

They will tell you. Call from a payphone and don't give your name and hope they tell you the right answer.

The minimum limit that requires someone to file an income tax return is $7800. If that was all of her income, no tax return is required.
