My daughter received her W-2 form from a parttime job she had for about 2 months last year. She is sure she claimed 0 allowances on her W-4. Out of $456.50, the W-2 reports only $1.00 withheld for federal income tax. This can't be correct, can it? ($28.30 for social security and $6.62 for medicare was withheld) Unfortunately, it was a Mom and Pop company and she has no check stubs; she was paid out of a regular checking account with the amount withheld written at the bottom of the check so that when she deposited them, she had no record. What should we do? We live in Texas.
Thanks!

The FICA and Medicare taxes you give are correct for $456.50, so if your daughter deposited or cashed checks netting to $420.58, then $1 was withheld for federal income tax:

$456.50 - $28.30 FICA - $6.62 Medicare - $1 federal income tax withholding = $420.58.

This is probably correct.

The IRS withholding tables (see Publication 15) show 0% for a single person with zero exemptions with a monthly wage up to $221 or a daily wage up to $10.20. That sounds about right for two months of wages totalling $456.50.

Thanks! It seemed unbelievably low to me, but I'm glad I don't have to worry about it now.
