What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York

Hi, I'm an IC working door-to-door in City A. I won a sales contest at my office and I 'won' the right to work at another company office in another city (let's call it City B).

After working in City B for 30 days, they told me I'd have to return to City A but I'd be able to come back to City B in a month.

Now, it's been almost a month and my bosses have made it clear they won't let me go back to City B - even if I were to move there temporarily.

I'm an independent contractor. Shouldn't I be able to work wherever I want?
Do I have any legal recourse for them preventing me from working?

Thanks! What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

As an IC, you get decide WHO you want to work for but when you are working for client, they get to decide WHERE you work. If I engage a plumber to fix the sink at my vacation home, he doesn't get to decide that he'll do the work at my home in the city.

Do I have any legal recourse for them preventing me from working? Can you force them to move you back to City B? No. If you don't like the location the client is having you work at, then you find another client in the city where you'd prefer to work and go work for them (after fulfilling any contractual obligation you have to the current client, if any.)

P.S. They're not preventing you from working; apparently they just don't need you working at the city where you'd prefer to be.

You are under the mistaken impression that being an IC gives you the right to make all the decisions and force your customer comply with how you want to work.
