I am currently getting a divorce (my second). I've been a TN resident for 7 yrs. My grandfather died in 1999, my grandma gave me a $5000.00 US savings bond, in my grandfathers name to me, which was in my first married name. My grandfather lived in Idaho. The bond has already matured but I have not cashed it or rolled it over. It's in my safe deposit box. Is my current husband entitled to any of it? We married in 1995.

My response:

No. Inheritances are, and always remain, "separate property" - - not subject to division - - unless you cash it out and place the funds into a joint account; then, it becomes "commingled funds" subject to division. In other words, always keep such money separated from marital funds.
