I am a culinary student at NMU. Recently during a production class, I was sharpening the kitchen knives. One of the knives slipped while I was honing it and cut me on the back of my thumb. After hearing of the accident the Insrtuctor checked the injury and said that I needed to go to the hospital for stiches. I responded that the cut wasn't that bad and refused any medical treatment. My instructor continued that it was a matter of school policy and that she was required to have public safety escort me to the hospital. I followed her instructions and recieved 2 stiches and a tetanus shot. Now the hospital has sent me an $800 bill and the dean of students will not pay the bill. I would never have seeked medical attention for this type of injury on my own. Shouldn't the school be required to take care of my bill, or better yet have insurance since the students do opperate a functional cafeteria and restaurant? What can I do to get the school to take care of my hospital expenses?

stitches

its a shame. sounds like this was not at night. you have 12 hours to get stitches. do YOU have medical insurance? you should have called your doc first and if the office was closed go to an urgent care center. did you sign anything if you were harmed at school they were not liable? sounds like you might get them to pay the bill but is it worth it? how will the school treat you? i would talk to someone high up at this school about their insurance policy I'm sure you are covered unless you signed something

No this was around lunchtime. The university medical center was on lunch break and no doctors would have been available for an hour. So I was taken to the ER (where I waited for about an hour to be treated  ) The shcool's policy also requires that I be escorted to the hospital. Fortunatly a public saftey officer was available and an ambulance wasn't necessary. I do not have any medical insurance and I haven't signed any liability waivers. My teachers have been very supportive of me and are fighting with the dean on my behalf. Also they have refused to follow this policy until an agreement that won't harm students financialy can be reached. She has also put me in contact with a local orginazation that might be able to provide me with insurance at no or little cost.

Thank you for your reply

Once you got to the ER, why didnt you just refuse treatment. They would have escorted you to the hospital to satisfy their policy. You wouldnt have a bill and all would be happy. Next time be careful...I hear all chefs cut themselves. Its like initiation or something I believe..... :D

insurance

please get some type of medical insurance. you really are at risk walking around without it. just to keep in mind stitches need to be done in 12 hours and a tetanus shot from a clean cut can be 72 hours but i think 24 hours if a dirty cut. you don't need a tetanus shot if you keep up to date with your boosters which are every 10 years.

Call me crazy, but doesn't NMU require medical insurance - either personal or school policy - to be had by the student? I say this because I am a part time evening student and I was required to show proof of medical insurance (and up to date shots) before being allowed to register. Same was true of my undergraduate institution.

Methinks you tried to find a risky way to save money...

I am not sure if they require med insurance or not. Will have to look that one up. When I graduated High School and was accepted to NMU in 1995 I was still covered under my parents BC/BS policy, which for me expired about 4 years ago. I did have to show a copy of my immunization records before the school would let me register. Then I went through 3 different majors before failing out and was put on a 1 year suspension. I took a total of two years off and returned to school to start work on a hospitality managment degree(I am now carrying a 3.9GPA since reentry into school) My Readdmision application said nothing about insurance. Did you attend this school or do you think that this is a standard policy that most schools follow?
