Inmate release to attend father's funeral? HELP!!!

We are in Georgia.

One of my dearest friends unexpectedly passed away on Thanksgiving Day at the age of 55. He has a son who is serving time for a drug charge in a prison located four hours away. The son and his dad were very close and, obviously, he wants to attend the funeral and grieve with the rest of his family as anyone else would.

He is serving time for multiple drug charges and his release date is scheduled for 11/08. To date, he has been a "model prisoner" with no behavior issues. He is also released daily into the custody of a local tradesman for a work-release program.

What are our options for trying to get him released for 24 hours or so to attend his dad's funeral service? I am trying to do all the leg work and research, but I realize the mother will have to be the one who officially petitions his temporary release. She is willing to pay for off-duty officers (time, mileage, expenses, anything) to escort him every moment he is out of state custody!

Any help or ideas here will be greatly appreciated! This is one of the toughest things I've ever had to deal with and don't know where to begin.

Call the warden of the prison he is incarcerated in and ask what the procedure is. I have no idea how they do it in GA, but in CA you aren't going to get 24 hours to go to a funeral. They will allow travel time to and from the institution, a reasonable amount of time for the services and that's it. No repass, no time to socialize with family, none of that.

If it's immediate family , they may also transport the inmate , handcuffed to the funeral .

I'm aware in my State , they even will handcuff and transport at the county jail level , sometimes in jail cloths .

But contact the correctional facility to see what needs to be done .

This is correct in my state also. Actually, I've been to a funeral where someone was brought in (decedent was the brother) right to the church... handcuffs and shackles with a guard on either side.

Directly after the funeral he was back in the transport van, back on his way, however, 2 months later, his son died and they would not grant him leave for that funeral.
