What is the name of your state? Illinois

I have a family member that was arrested for something mild, however they brought on more charges and brought the original charge to something worst. They told him that he should make a plea bargain to not have the high risk of being found guilty (he wasnt guilty) and going to jail for a longer period. He did this to not cost our family more pain or money. The lawyers told us and him if he pleaded guilty he would serve for so long. Now he is in prison for twice as long. Our representation knew the prosecution very well. They never should have taken on the case and believe they were not there to help my family member. Our we able to appeal? They would not give us the information regarding the case till right before the 30 days. (You have 30 days to appeal). They have not kept in contact with us. I believe we were misrepresented in many many ways.

Before a person pleads guilty, the judge advises him exactly what his maximum sentence will be. If that did not happen and your family member was truly surprised by his sentence, he has grounds for an appeal.

File a complaint with the state bar if you think his lawyers did such a disservice. From the reasons you give, it sounds to me they may not be to blame.
