Insurance cancellation

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MO

Insurance was cancelled as of 6-30-08. Was not aware of this cancellation until 7-24-08 and had incurred a huge doctor bill on 7-18-08. Should employee insurance have to pay this bill since I was not notified?
