I've seen several recent posts mention the issue of an insurance company paying for a rental car (when the rental is needed due to an accident). If I'm in an accident, it's the other guy's fault, and his insurance is taking too long to decide whether to pay for a rental, I can have my insurance pay for my rental. What happens from here? Will my insurance company necessarily go back to the other guy's insurance and demand reimbursement? And regardless of whether they get their money back, can they raise my rates?

And the flip side -- if I'm in an accident and it is my fault, and my insurance company pays for the rental, can they raise my rates in that case?

I've seen some posts mentioning when an insurance company can and can't raise rates, but I'm not too clear on when it's legal for them to do so and when it's not. Any info is appreciated. (If the answer varies by state, I'm in NC.)
