What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Florida

I'm taking my car overseas for an indefinite period of time (due to work). The car will remain on Florida plates. The car is a 2007 Nissan Murano in excellent condition with alarm and anti-theft device. My driving record is spotless.

Geico's international office just wrote: We regret to inform you that due to our present underwriting guidelines we will not be able to offer you coverage as requested. We thank you very much for your interest in GEICO and wish you the best for the future.

Geico refused to provide additional information in follow-up correspondence. Is this standard procedure to turn down an application without providing an explanation? The Geico US office has assured me that they cover my country. I can't think of any other reason why I would be turned down. I'm worried that there might have been a mistake in my application that I don't know about.

You didn't say where you were taking the car. Not all insurance companies offer overseas coverage and those that do restrict the countries in which they offer insurance.

I'm assuming you're going in a civilian capacity. Contact the company you'll be working for to see who offers car insurance in the country in which you'll be working.

In all probability, you'll not be able to keep your stateside tags. You'll have to get tags for the geographical area in which the car will be housed.

Have you notified your lender you're taking the car out of the states? Do you have their approval in writing?

Are you aware taking the car overseas will void the car's warranty?

The car is going to Bosnia. Geico's U.S. office assured me they offer coverage for Bosnia. I've been dealing with the office in Germany by e-mail and they are the ones who won't offer an explanation for why coverage was declined.

The car is paid in full so no worries with lender.

There are just not a lot of U.S. companies offering civilians insurance in Bosnia.

Weren't you given a sponsor? If so, contact him/her about insurance. You may prefer to get a recommendation from a U.S. civilian who is already there.

If you haven't been given a sponsor, contact the company you're going to work for in Bosnia and ask where the private contractors can get their auto insurance. You will probably find you're dealing with a local company.

You could also email the Geico Germany office and ask for a list of companies that can provide the insurance. They may or may not provide a list; but, it doesn't hurt to ask.

Be very, very nice in the email (and I think you will be) and tell them you're a long-term customer (if you are), you're so sorry to find out they don't offer the coverage - you will be grateful if they will give you a few companies to contact or someone to contact to get a list.

Congrats about not having a lien on the car.

Can you elaborate on what kind of issues we might have when we return to Florida? We plan on keeping our residence there and also will continue to pay for stateside insurance coverage. Thanks.
