What is the name of your state? Missouri

Our son has a car in his name only. Can we be held responsible if he does not keep insurance on it and is in an accident?

Warning to parents! A car turns your teen boy into a prideful monster who thinks he owns the world. Don't let him have one, if you must, make sure his name isn't on it so you have some control over the animal.

You haven't given me any facts upon which to base an answer, but yes, it is possible.

My suggestion: buy a huge amount of liability insurance plus a million dollar umbrella policy. Talk to your insurance agent yesterday.

(Full disclosure: I am not an insurance agent but once had three teenage children in my household which I managed not to thrash too soundly, just soundly enough.)

Car title..

The problem is, if the car is in your name, you are definitely liable should he get into an accident. If the car is in his name, and he can't afford the insurance, take the keys.

teen title & insurance

"At age 15 1/2, you are treated as an adult under Missouri's traffic laws." This came from the Missouri bar website. Wonder if it means HE would be responsible entirely (financial too) if in an accident with another vehicle.

Our insurance agent said they couldn't believe he could get a title in his name alone when he's not emancipated. I was looking at the registration & it does have a place to sign for financial responsibility. He's the only one who signed it.

Well, anyway, if you've seen some of my other posts you know he's been causing some trouble so we told him we pulled the insurance on his car and he can go find his own (saw one quote that came out to $200 a month!). We asked the local police if we could take the plates off the car & get away with it. They said we could because he couldn't even file a complaint or whatever without us being there.

Thanx for the advice!

Don't let your insurance agent give you any more legal advice.
