What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?
California

A friend who has AAA insurance wrecked our car, we do not have insurance and the car is still in old owners (out of state) name.
Can we be sued

Certainly you can. Anybody can be sued. The question is do you have any liability. It's possible that you might. Certainly without insurance, you'll have to defend yourself (i.e., pay a lawyer) against any such suit. The driver might have insurance that covers HIS liability but that won't extend to you. You may also be in danger of action for the failure to register and insure the car.

OK, here's the thing. The guy who was driving our car has insurance, if his insurance pays off on the car he hit, can his insurance co. come after us to collect what they paid him ? Thanks for answering my questions.

No, not under those circumstances. But if YOU are named in a lawsuit, the driver's insurance will not protect or represent you, they will only provide for the defense of their insured. If they pay the claim to everyone's satisfaction, that may not matter, but it's still possible.
