What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas

I am trying to find some legal advice and assistance to process a divorce in a somewhat complicated situation. My wife and I are both US citizens that have been a part for 4 years and live in different countries. We have 2 children that live with their mother. We were married in 1996.

Our last place of U.S. residency was in Katy, TX , Harris County in 2005. We moved from there to Scotland in 2005. The marriage fell apart at the end of 2006 and I moved out in 2007, but we both remained in Scotland for my job. She was also employed at a school there. In 2008, I moved to Indonesia for a new job and she elected to stay in Scotland for work and secured her own visas. The kids stayed with her. In 2010, she moved to Germany for a new job and is still there.

Neither of us has any plans to go back to the US for at least 2 years, but we want to finish the divorce. We had originally started a divorce in Scotland, but abandoned it since the legal system there had a hard time dealing with US pension plans, retirement accounts, etc.

I have had difficulty determining whether it is possible for me to get divorced in the US and what the options are. I am a registered voter in Texas and hold a Texas drivers license. I had assumed that I could process a divorce through that state, but have gotten mixed feedback on whether that will work or not since we are both out of the US.

Both of us want to move on with our lives and are on fairly decent terms. It has just been a real struggle to find out what the path forward is. Any advice would be appreciated. Even if it is just a suggestion on who to call.

Thanks for any help in advance....

I don't see any way that you can handle this without an attorney. I would first talk with an attorney in TX and if that doesn't help, then you'll need an attorney, probably in Germany because the kids are currently residents there.
