What is the name of your state?TX
Help! My sister recently moved her disabled daughter into a new school district. She was informed by the district that she basically has no choice but to allow them to place her child in a self contained classroom. The only other alternative would be for her to sit in a reg. ed. classroom and not learn. We feel that she is capable of learning, but nobody is giving her the chance. After all she can tell you the exact names of the many problems that she has with her health and can explain in detail the surgery that she had on her arm more than a year ago. She suffers from a form of cerebal palsy that only affects one side of her body. She often misses school because of severe problems with her kidneys and a problem with her colon.

There are some things you can do. Educating yourself is priority one. Request that she be tested immediately. If the school cannot provide a free and appropriate education she has legal means to have the district pay for private school through IDEA. Where was she in her last school? Why does the school have only self-contained or mainstream? The fact that she misses a lot of school may be a factor. What is her IQ? Can she feed herself, go to the restroom without assistance? What assitive technology devices does she require? Have you contacted the Special Ed. office in your district? MHMR? What region are you in?
