What is the name of your state? New Jersey

I am an electrical construction union member. The electrical cost of a construction job is used to determine how some rules of the collective bargaining agreement are applied. I went to the town hall where a public construction job is taking place. At the town hall I filled out a request for information form in order to obtain the electrical costs of the construction contracts for the building that I am working on. Someone at the town hall informed the general contractor of the construction project of my request for the information. Then the general contractor representative called the electrical contractor of the project, whom I work for. Then the electrical contractor called my union business agent. The business agent called me and said that I was making everyone uncomfortable by making the request for public information. The business agent also said the electrical contractor was talking about firing me for making the request. Three days later I was dismissed from my job. No reason was given for the dismissal. My business agent intervened and I was given my job back within a hour.

I feel that my rights were violated by the person from the town who called the general contractor to inform them of my request for public information. This person should not be allowed to intimidate people into not making such requests.

I would like to know if what the town official did was illegal? What can I do to reprimand him?

All the town offical did according to your poat is notify the GC of your request. You didn't mention anything abou the town official requesting you be terminated did you? Your union agent got your job back didn't they? Let it go and move on.

What right does the town official have to notify my employer that I made a request for public information? The situation turned out OK no thanks to the town official. There would have been no situation if it were not for him. What about the next guy who request public information from this bully? How many people has he done this to before who had to stop what they were doing due to his extortion?

So, you're suggesting some law exists that prohibits him from telling your employer that you requested this information?

I suggest you go to your favorite search engine and look up the term, Freedom of Speech.

Your saying that his freedom of speech allows him to talk about this to whomever he wants? I though that a persons freedoms cease when they start to infringe on another persons freedom.

And what freedom exactly did this official infringe on?

From what I'm learning from you all the town official did nothing illegal. Even though what he did is not illegal, is no one bothered by his reaction? I would at least say that it is unethical.

Well let's see unethical as it might have been----NOT ILLEGAL!

Whether or not anyone agrees with you that it was unethical (and I'm not certain that I do), the only thing that matters is that it is not illegal.
