Invasion of Privacy - Employer Responsibility

What are the laws governing invasion of privacy with respect to an employer? Is public disclosure of personal information inside or outside of the workplace an intentional tort or a crime? Would the sharing of information contained in your work Emails with people outside of the company by they or their agents be considered a crime?
