I decided to open up an E*TRADE account and start investing in some stocks, despite the volatility of the market. Could someone with sufficient experience in investing give me a few helpful hints as to how and where I should invest my money? I am looking for short-term investments for now with small yields, nothing too risky at the moment. What do I need to watch out for? What sort of stocks should I be looking at? What kind of returns should I be expecting with respect to my 'short-term' goals? Any advice would be very appreciated.

:) Happy New YearWhat is the name of your state?

This is a legal advice board, not investing. There are plenty of financial investment boards out there.
