What is the name of your state? CA

On my tax return, I said nobody could claim me as a dependent. I was claimed as a dependent by my parents, and they got a notice about it. Now what?

The IRS will determine who gets to claim you and adjust the return accordingly. This year, have the same person prepare both returns.

my responsibility

but it was my mistake for putting that nobody could claim me as a dependent. so what am i supposed to do?

Wait and see what adjustments the IRS makes. If your parents are charged for the adjustment, pay your parents back. Next time read the form before you sign it and make sure it's accurate...

Read the letter the IRS sent. It probably states that someone else claimed you, and if you are entitled to claim yourself, do nothing, but if you claimed yourself in error, to file an amended return.

Bring the IRS letter to a tax professional and let them tell you what to do. If it says to amend your return, let the preparer do it. Be sure to bring a copy of your original return. If you don't have one, you can get one from your local IRS office. A printout is free.

How much of income did you have? Your income does make a difference as to whether someone can claim you as a dependent.

1. How old are you?
2. Did you live with your parents or elsewhere?
3. Were you a full time student for more than 5 mos of the year, as determined by your college or university?
4. Are you married?

Seriously, take the letter and a copy of your return to a tax pro. If you need to do an amended return it will cost you about $60. If you don't need to, it won't cost you anything.
