I am desperate for advice in PA. Owe 50K+ to IRS - old income taxes and 941's. More than I made annually for the last couple years. Zilch assets - divorce. One dependent (actually two, but my SO claims the other), $1,250/month support and alimony.
I don't want to deal with the IRS myself. Consulted with compromise specialist attorney (.com) Wants $3,500 if he feels I am qualified to submit compromise (says very rarely disapproved for him.) Less money (?), if not qualified, to handle a simple payment plan.
I read the related archives but still having trouble sorting things out:
1) didn't do the expense forms; anyone have an opinion based on the limited info provided whether I might be a good candidate for compromise acceptance? Is there a way I can get a better handle on the odds of acceptance? Doesn't need to be "pennies on the dollar", just something manageable.
2.) Does the .com guy's fee seem reasonable? He seems credible and professional but I don't want to be scammed. It's definitely worth something to have someone else deal with the beloved irs, regardless of the outcome.
3.) Would I be better off retaining a local tax attorney who probably isn't as well versed on compromises?
TIA for any comments to point me in the right direction...losing touch here.
Where's the shotgun? Just kiddin...
p.s., Have tried to educate myself, know about the five-year compliance, long wait time, possibility of a request for bank records...anything else?
