What is the name of your state? CA

If the IRS has a misprent on their website and you rely on it, are you still liable for the taxes.

I was a day trader but did not file the required change of accounting method because the IRS website said I should just file a schedule D.

You are still liable for the taxes. Your duty to pay taxes depends on the tax code, not the IRS website. However, the misprint on the IRS website is something you could raise in a request to forgive interest & penalties.
