What is the name of your state? Florida

I switched Auto Insurance providers almost 6 months ago from Progressive to Geico. It was in the middle of my term. I paid on both policies for a couple months until the rep at Geico informed me that I didn't have to. She said that my old policy was automatically cancelled by starting a new one. I then stopped paying Progressive. Yesterday I recieved a letter from a collection agency for what I assume is the remaining balance of my 6 month term that should have been cancelled.
Do I actually owe them money? Is this just a last ditch effort to extract money from me? Isn't insurance paid in advance anyway?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
