I am a contractor working in Japan, I agreed to come here for one year and the niether Japanese company I am contracted to or my US contractor said anything about taxes also the contract I signed did not mention taxes. The Japanese company requested that I extend my contract for more than one year and still taxes were not mentioned. Now it turns out that the Japanese government wants some tax. It is my position that the Japanese company should pay the tax since it was they who requested the extension. It is the Japanese companies position that either the US contracting company or myself is responsible. I certainly do think I am responsible since I was not informed in the first place. I just learned of this and have not yet contacted the contracting company.

Is the tax due because of the extension? This is a question that involves foreign law and I can't relly help you on it. It also is a matter of negotiation and you'll need someone to coach you.
